A veteran is someone who has served in the British Armed Forces (regular or Reserve) for a least one day.
The NHS has a duty to deliver a number of health commitments in relation to the Armed Forces community (service personal – both regular and reserves, their families and veterans). These are set out in the Armed Forces Covenant and the NHS Constitution.
Southgate Medical Group are working to better identify and treat veterans. Referring them, where appropriate, to dedicated NHS services which specialise in military related health conditions and veteran specific health service.
Being flagged as a veteran in your NHS medical record will help ensure you are able to access specific veterans’ health service.

As part of the health commitment of the Armed Covenant, we offer the following :
- Dedicated a clinical lead for veteran health
- Ask patients “Have you served?” to identify veteran patients
- Support veteran patients to access dedicated health services
- Undertake specialist training to meet the health commitment of the Armed Forces Covenant
- Offering these service are important in helping ex-forces to get the best care and treatment.
Veteran Support
NHS Chavasse Clinic – Brighton
- Run by Lieutenant Colonel Ben Caesar, a trauma and orthopaedic surgeon. ANY veteran can be referred to this service directly – they do not have to go via the NHS MSK service – and he will generally see a patient within 2-3 weeks after referral.

ADFAM Support for Veterans’ Families
The service is open to any adult family member of someone who has served in the British armed forces and also has drug or alcohol problems.
